One of only four highly specialized and secure biocontainment units in the United States is located here. Nebraska Medicine’s 10-bed unit was built 10 years ago for the purpose of containing and treating patients with infectious diseases. In 2014, the U.S. State Department enlisted the unit and its specialists to treat patients who contracted the Ebola virus while working in west Africa. Our infectious disease specialists are also engaged in a broad range of research and educational activities.
In addition to Nebraska Medicine, we are also home to nationally-acclaimed medical centers, CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center and Children's Hospital and Medical Center.
The economic impact of these institutions is astounding. Just one example – the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine and their affiliates generated an overall economic impact in Nebraska of $4.2 billion and supported almost 29,000 jobs during FY 13-14. - Source: consulting firm Tripp Umbach
